Minnesota's frost line reaches 60–80 inches deep — among the deepest in the country. Pools must be engineered for freeze-thaw: concrete footings below the frost line on sono tubes set 4 feet on center, 14-gauge (not 16-gauge) steel walls with triple bracing, granular backfill for drainage, and plumbing that can be fully blown out for winterization. Pools built with Sun Belt methods will fail in our climate. Pools built correctly last decades — our earliest installations from the 1990s are still going strong.

In many jurisdictions, an ASTM-rated automatic safety cover (like the SwimWise and Coverstar units we install) can satisfy the barrier requirement in place of a fence — but verify with your city first.
